Please join Nancy López, Director and Co-Founder, Institute for the Study of “Race” & Social Justice and Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of New Mexico, in the NHCC Library as she discusses the insights of intersectionality –the importance of examining race, gender, class, and ethnicity–for interrogating inequalities across a variety of social outcomes, including education, health, employment, housing, and developing contextualized solutions that advance social justice.
Nancy López PhD, Director and Co-founder, Institute for the Study of “Race” & Social Justice (race.unm.edu), Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of New Mexico will present a talk entitled “Intersectionality for ...Making the Invisible Visible” What is intersectionality? How can intersectionality (the simultaneity of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, ethnicity, citizenship and other social locations within institutions, laws, practices and lived experiences) be a tool for better serving vulnerable communities? Our point of departure is that it isn’t enough to focus on race, gender or class, alone, if we are interested in addressing the needs of our most vulnerable communities. Using data on race-gender-class gaps in college graduation and educational attainment, we will explore how an intersectional lens can help advance social equity and justice.
