The African American Performing Arts Center (AAPAC) Foundation is New Mexico’s only art foundation supporting an African American performing arts center and exhibit hall. The foundation’s mission is to bring a heightened awareness of and promote African American arts as it relates to culture and heritage helping ensure that the people of New Mexico continue to enjoy the cultural experiences and contributions of African Americans in our state. Although strains on our economy and budgetary restrictions have impacted our operations, it is intently focused on growing it’s performing arts and educational programs.

Director Frank Green seeks to complement the mission of AAPAC by showcasing the rich and dynamic African-American experience of today by telling a story that takes place exactly 30 years ago when Yo! MTV Raps began to change the musical landscape of the US.

We invite you to join AAPAC on Friday, June 15, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. as APAAC Presents in Partnership with the Nu Rho Chapter of Omega Psi Phi, Idris Goodwin’s award-winning How We Got On as part of the 2018 Afriquerque Festival commemoration of Juneteenth. How We Got On is a contemporary ode to the roots of rap told through the lives of three talented suburban teens coming of age in the 1980s. Overcoming cultural isolation, family dysfunction, and ruthless rivalries to make the music defining their lives this coming of age story is a one night only event.

You do not want to miss this production featuring Benjamin Eagle, local lyricist and Good Day New Mexico host Khalil Eukalona, DJ Anjo, Thandi Sinandile and directed by Duke City Repertory Theatre’s Frank Taylor Green, collectively known as the Griots.
To paraphrase Jesse Jackson’s 1984 speech to the National Association of Black Journalists: It would be amazing to see what one strong night would mean to the city of Albuquerque. Just one night away from a top-rated show or club. Maybe just one full house, one sold out night…
